My 6-year-old son, Jay, is in the Cub Scout, and this weekend is a big deal for him because tonight was the weigh-in for the Pinewood Derby, which is taking place early tomorrow morning.
As those of you who are/have been in the Boy Scout know, the Pinewood Derby is one of the biggest events of the year where you (typically a father-son team) carve a tiny little car out of a block of pinewood and race against other teams for trophies. There are millions of rules as far as the dimention and weight of the car go not to mention the official material, number of pieces attached, and so on.
We had originally planned on making this into a family event to show Jay our support, but this year's flu season obviously had a completely different plan for us. While we're grateful that Jay finally recovered fully along with Rachid and me just in time for this big event, our little Pucker is still feverish and coughing up a storm...
Hence the whole weigh-in → dinner → dessert plan didn't work out, and we once again had to split up the team. (See last Weekend's blog. Hey, why am I always on the sick team?) After sobbing for a good while about the life's unfair treatment and with the help of a special arrangement with Rachid for a goodie-home-delivery, Pucker finally agreed to stay behind with me.
After appointing Rachid to pick up Sushi dinner for two and making sure that I was okay with his movie selection, Pucker whispered to me with that big grin of his, "It's like we're having a date, huh, Mama?" Although he ended up falling asleep in the middle of the movie long before his milk shake finally made it home, I had such a great time with my little guy tonight--it possibly could have been the best first date I have ever been on.
Thumbs up for Transformers!
